The Manzos, Mike and Rachel: a Family Facing Prison
December 31st, 2008 | by BGuzzardi |
The Manzos, Mike and Rachel, a family facing prison, are they not? House Majority Leader Bill DeWeese and Democratic caucus are distancing themselves from former Majority Leader’s chief of staff, Mike Manzo, who has now agreed to plead guilty. As Brad Bumsted points out, Mike Manzo has been around for a long time, very inside the very inside of not only House Democrats, but lobbyists and Republicans. There is not a firewall in the Capitol and Manzo either is an eyewitness and participant in a lot of questionable activity or he knows where to show the investigators and prosecutors to look. The only Mike Manzo avoids a long prison sentence, and, more importantly, avoids a long prison sentence for his wife whom he has already done wrong is to tell “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth”, something that may be new to him but a new skill he will have to learn. The threat of imprisonment for himself and his wife while his former colleagues walk around enjoying ill gotten gains can be an effective form of behavior modification. Mike Manzo seems to have solved the prisoner’s dilemma.

What can Manzo offer? Is he credible? The allegations made agains house D’s is not a problem exclusive to them. For many years House Rs, Senate Rs and Ds, have co-mingled their public duties with private gain. I am hopeful that the Attorney General will do the right thing as a prosecutor and fully investigate the matter and bring charges across the board and party lines.
