Happy Anniversary Senator Specter

December 2nd, 2009 | by BGuzzardi |

Terrific 2:49 minute video. If Arlen Specter were as independent as he says, he could have run as an Independent as did Senator Joe Lieberman. Instead he is running, opportunistically, for the sake of his own career as a registered Obama Democrat with the backing of Democrats Earmarking Establishment throughout Pennsylvania.

Happy Anniversary Senator Specter, Part Two

I’m a man without conviction, I’m a man who doesn’t know how to sell a contradiction.” – Culture Club

Allentown, PA – The Toomey campaign released a video today commemorating Senator Specter’s six month anniversary as a Democrat.

Six months ago to the day, Arlen Specter left the Republican Party because the polls showed he couldn’t win against Pat Toomey.  Today, the polls show Pennsylvanians of all political stripes are rejecting his rampant political opportunism and complete lack of principle.

“Over the past sixth months,” Toomey Communications Director Nachama Soloveichik said, “Senator Specter has proven that the preservation of his political career will always come first—before his party, his alleged principles, and even his promises to the people of Pennsylvania.  Time and again this year, he has switched positions, not just in his party affiliation, but on health care, Card Check, and many other issues.  It is no surprise that Pennsylvanians are rejecting Senator Specter in favor of a thoughtful and principled candidate like Pat Toomey.”

Health Care:

  • Against: Senator Specter told David Gregory on Meet the Press that he would not support a public option, emphatically stating when pressed on the question, “That’s what I said, and that’s what I meant” (May 3, 2009, Meet the Press).
  • For: Less than two months later, Specter declared his support for the public option at a labor rally on June 25, 2009 and has since declared, “I’m not prepared to recede at all; I think the public option is gaining momentum” (Fox News Sunday, October 18, 2009).

Card Check:

  • Against: In a much anticipated speech on the Senate floor, Senator Specter announced he would not vote for Card Check (March 24, 2009, www.specter.senate.gov).
  • For: Less than three months later, Specter told a union rally, “I think you will be satisfied with my vote on this issue about union organizing and about first contract (June 6, 2009, Union rally, Pittsburgh, PA).  He reiterated his support at a Netroots Nation conference on August 14, 2009.

Reconciliation Process:

  • Against: On April 28, 2009, Senator Specter said “I am opposed to reconciliation to be used for heath care or any other substantive legislative issue” (MSNBC).
  • For: When asked about using reconciliation for health care on August 23, 2009, Specter said, “As a very last, last, last resort, if you can’t get anything else, I would consider it” (Fox News Sunday).

Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA):

  • For: Senator Specter voted for DOMA in 1996 (RC #280, September 10, 1996).  As recently as this year, he wrote to a constituent explaining his support for DOMA (Open Left).
  • Against: Two days ago, on October 26, 2009, Senator Specter announced his support for repealing DOMA.

Toomey Communications Director Nachama Soloveichik concluded, “Arlen Specter is changing positions so quickly these days, Pennsylvanians cannot know where he stands from one week to the next.  Could a switch from the Phillies to the Yankees be next?  In any case, we thought it would be courteous to offer Senator Specter this commemorative video on the occasion of the six month anniversary of his party switch.”
